New Web Site and Portfolios (and Breakfast at the Carolina Inn)

Yes, I'm crazy.  Crazy to undertake two huge projects right smack in the middle of the busiest part of my season!  Project 1: Re-branding and creating an identity (more on that to come later).  Project 2:  Building a new web site and updating the online galleries.  So, after a couple months of super long days and nights where my eyes stared at images and the computer so much I started to feel like I was going to burn a hole right through the monitor (not to mention the days I stayed in my pajamas all day because I didn't have time to shower and change and the only thing I had to bear was my harried reflection in the computer...) I'm so excited to share my new web site!

The site is powered by Neon Sky, a popular choice among photographers in all different niches.  My good friend Brandon has worked for them for several years, and I've always wanted a Neon Sky site, and so I'm really happy that I've finally made the jump!

Initially, I thought it would be fairly simple and straightforward to transfer my site, but then I started thinking that I've created so much new work that it would be silly to create a new site without updating the photos.  Therein lies the craziness and the long hours.  You literally can go around in circles reviewing and selecting images.  I recommend enlisting the eyes and advice of just a few people (too many opinions is not helpful) and "sleeping" on your selections for a period of time.  Although this isn't exactly eco-friendly, one of my photo teachers also suggests printing out photos and hanging them on the walls because if you can "live" with your images for awhile, you know they're keepers.  Once I had my photo selections, then I was faced with the rather daunting task of sequencing the images.

A little more than four years ago, Brandon (the same Brandon from Neon Sky) and I were lucky enough to have breakfast with Pulitzer Prize Winner Kim Komenich at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill.  During breakfast (which Kim treated!), Kim talked about the importance of sequencing photos.  Essentially, you're trying to create a "symphonic, cinematic experience," and so the way images flow is almost just as important as the images themselves.  See, I found my breakfast notes:

Even though we were talking about creating a photojournalism portfolio, the same message applies to pretty much any kind of photography.  I tried to carefully sequence photos based on all different kinds of factors including composition, moment, color, graphic elements, content and light.  So, here is my best attempt at creating my symphony:

In addition to new work and more tightly edited portfolios, the site also has more information about things like the photo booth, photo booth flip book, and albums.  Plus, it's an entirely new (and cleaner!) layout!  It's still a work in progress, but for now, I'm satisfied.

Katie + William in Berkeley, CA

For the second time this summer, Adm and I found ourselves at the Brazilian Room in Berkeley for Katie and William's wedding.  It's really such a lovely spot, up in the hills, away from city noise and traffic.  Plus, I always love seeing how different couples transform places and create events to make them really feel their own.  Katie and William were no exception and they carried through an Irish theme with a live band that played traditional Irish music, engaged in Irish dancing and created details that clearly were made with the touch of an Irish lass.  Adm and I had such a wonderful time hanging out with Katie and William, who were just so genuinely nice throughout.  I feel like I'm becoming a broken record when I say these were two of the nicest people we've photographed, but it's so true!  We have been so lucky to have such nice and caring couples to work with!

Ginny + Sep in Fremont, CA

Wow.  Summer is flying by!  It seems like just last week when Adm and I were jumping on the bouncy bushes at Ginny and Sep's engagement session, and now it's been more than a month since their wedding!  These two have been so nice and fun to work with throughout, and their wedding was no exception.  Adm was still recovering from his back surgery so his father and veteran photojournalist Al joined me.  This was my second time photographing at the Palmdale Estates in Fremont, and just as before, the light was spectacular, especially for the portraits.  I don't say it enough, but I am so privileged that people let me into their lives to document their special moments and intimate relationships.  When I met up with Ginny and Sep a week before the wedding, Sep had a black eye (casualty of playing indoor soccer), and when he was getting ready with his guys, he was sarcastic, a little rough around the edges, and throughout, he hasn't totally been into having his picture taken.  But, when I swept Ginny and Sep off for their portraits, Sep almost became a different person - he was so sweet and loving towards Ginny, totally in love with his new bride.  I love that I get to see all these facets of people.  Ginny and Sep, thanks for trusting me with these memories, and Sep, I'm sorry if I've blown your cover.  You're such a great guy with a fabulous woman!

Ivonne + Brian in Knights Ferry, CA

Ivonne and Brian were married at Ivonne's family church, St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Modesto, before celebrating at the Washington Hotel in Knight's Ferry.  Knights Ferry is one of the hidden gems of the Central Valley, en route to Yosemite when you're coming from the Bay Area, and it's definitely worth the stop if you're in the neighborhood.  With guests mingling on the lush lawn, overlooking the Stanislaus River, and the sun shining brightly through the old Oaks, these two could not have had a more perfect day.  They capped their day with a night filled with lots of dancing, one of my favorite activities to photograph!

Many many thanks to my good friend Allen who stepped up to second shoot with me while Adm was out with a severely herniated disc.  The photo below is by Allen:

Priscilla + Tim in Lafayette, CA

Priscilla and Tim were married in June in Lafayette.  Their ceremony was held at a beautiful private home followed by a reception at the Lafayette Veterans Hall.  Each time that I've met with them, they've both been so happy and enthusiastic about their wedding that I knew they were going to be beaming on their actual day.  They had such bright smiles and glowed all day long, which made my job quite easy.  Priscilla and Tim, I wish you both a marriage full of happiness and bright smiles!
